The arrival of MIT electric buses in Paraguay marks the official entry of Taiwan-made high-quality electric buses into the South American market, said Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.

After over three months of ocean and river transport, the MIT electric buses from the Taiwan-Paraguay “Electric Bus Pilot Program” have successfully arrived in Paraguay. On April 11, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed on social media his gratitude to President Santiago Peña for personally receiving the vehicles, which not only demonstrates the strength of the Taiwan-Paraguay friendship, but also signifies the export of Taiwan's smart net-zero technologies and mutually beneficial cooperation with its ally.

Lin emphasized that the joint Taiwan-Paraguay “Electric Bus Pilot Program” will help improve Paraguay’s public transportation once these MIT electric buses go into operation. This not only benefits local citizens, but also represents the official entrance of Taiwan's high-quality electric buses into the South American market, showcasing the growth and advancement of Taiwan’s electric bus industry and export of smart net-zero technologies.

Looking back, Lin recalled that in response to the global trends of digital transformation and net-zero goals, he had established a “National Electric Bus Team” during his tenure as Minister of Transportation, aiming to help develop Taiwan’s EV industry and push Taiwan-made electric vehicles onto the global stage.

Lin also mentioned that during President Peña’s 2023 visit to Taiwan, he personally experienced Taiwan’s high-quality public transportation system and expressed strong approval of its technological and manufacturing strengths. This paved the way for Taiwan’s donation of 30 electric buses to Paraguay and the joint promotion of the “Electric Bus Pilot Program,” aimed at improving daily life for the Paraguayan people.

At the end of 2024, following the “Prosperous South, Smart Sustainability” diplomatic mission with President Lai Ching-te, Lin visited the Port of Taipei to send off the shipment of electric buses—manufactured by Master Bus—bound for Paraguay.

Looking ahead, Lin announced that Master Bus will establish an electric bus factory within the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park. He also encouraged other Taiwanese companies to use Paraguay as a strategic base for entering the MERCOSUR market, creating continued mutual prosperity between Taiwan and Paraguay.
