Back to the Future – Driving the Green Transition with Imagination Launch Ceremony.

The Ministry of Environment and the National Taiwan Science Education Center have jointly launched the cross-disciplinary permanent exhibition “Back to the Future – Driving the Green Transition with Imagination,” which was officially unveiled today (19). For the first time, the exhibition adopts a curatorial narrative approach, transforming the often rigid concept of net-zero transition into engaging public science education by integrating science, humanities, and arts, and digital interactive experiences. It encourages the public to begin by imagining the future, rethink everyday life, and take action to participate in the green transition.
The Ministry of Environment noted that the exhibition closely follows the global net-zero trend and incorporates the curatorial expertise of the Science Education Center. It carefully presents nine key transition areas—transportation, space, environment, energy, materials, research and development, economy, food, and culture—along with 33 real transformation stories from Taiwan and abroad. Practical tools such as the “Net-Zero Green Lifestyle Action Guide” and the “Lifestyle Carbon Footprint Calculator” are cleverly integrated into the exhibition, conveying the core idea that “the power of change begins with imagination,” and inspiring behavioral change among the public.
Peng Chi-ming, Minister of Environment, emphasized that green transition is the practice of a series of choices. Although the public generally shows strong support for net-zero emissions, a gap remains between awareness and action. In addition, initiatives such as geothermal development, wind and solar power installations, and the promotion of low-carbon transportation such as bicycles and electric vehicles, often encounter many practical challenges. Therefore, achieving a net-zero transition requires joint efforts from the government, businesses, and the public. People often attribute greenhouse gas emissions to factory smokestacks, but in reality, carbon emissions from everyday life also account for a significant share. The core purpose of this permanent exhibition is to build a proper understanding through exhibition and education, helping people recognize that everyone plays a crucial role in carbon reduction, turning awareness into concrete action, and bridging the gap between awareness and behavior.
The “Back to the Future” special exhibition opened on March 19 and showcases inspiring ongoing cases and technologies from Taiwan, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Morocco. The exhibition also features interactive games such as “City Planner,” “Hall of Choices,” and “Money Grows Bigger.” The Ministry of Environment sincerely invites the public, schools, and groups across the country to visit the Science Education Center to explore the technologies and creativity behind the net-zero transition, use imagination to create a green lifestyle transformation, and work together to build a sustainable environmental future for Taiwan.
